Mike Uncorked: 100 Men Who Give a Damn
By Mike Butler
There’s lots of organizations here in the Valley that come together to help others out, and it’s a wonderful feeling to know that’s in place. We are so fortunate to have Kikima Grannies, CFUW, Women of Wolfville, Rotary Clubs, and so much more.
A few weeks ago, reading an article in The Advertiser, I stumbled upon a fantastic group that I had never heard of before, who are making a huge difference and I just had to highlight it here in my column. After some scavenging on the book of faces, I was delightfully acquainted with Zack Morse, who sat and chatted with me about the history of the 100 Men Who Give A Damn organization and what’s it’s all about !
The 100 Men Who Give A Damn are just that: a group of 100 men who meet four times a year to present a donated sum of funds to another organization that is doing their best to make our surrounding community better. The 100 men (plus) are all volunteers who join the group and commit themselves and their donated money to something they strongly believe in. The Valley chapter was started in December 2015 and it was modeled on other 100 Men groups that are spread over the world. In promoting the 100 men group, I do have to mention that there is a sister group of 100 women who give a damn as well so it’s captured the hearts of all. The men assemble four times a year and there’s several charities that give presentations to the group, describing their impact on the community and where the donated funds will be used. At the end of the meeting, each man donates $100, and the total sum moves directly to the awarded charity.
Zack Morse joined the 100 Men a few years ago and has loved his time serving in many capacities. “There is no formal administration and we have no operating costs,” Morse says, “all funds raised go to the recipient charity. A few members volunteer to serve on the organizing committee which handles tasks like managing the website, communications with members and charities, record keeping, and planning the meetings, but without an official board, it creates a feeling of equality and goal-sharing.”
Like most organizations, the 100 Men have goals. One goal is to reach 200 members in their chapter, which would translate into four $20k donations to local Valley charities. That number is a wonderful goal to reach for, and Zack and the men feel it’s easily attainable with growth and more involvement. Again, imagine 200 Men Who Give A Damn: has a nice ring to it doesn’t it?
So this is a call out to any fellas out there looking for something new and exciting to do with very little commitment except a monetary donation and your time. Wanna be one of the 100 Men Who Give A Damn ? Well, most of the general information about how they operate can be found on their website: 100menannapolisvalley.ca.
Meeting dates for 2019 are April 9, June 12, September 11, and November 12 at the Port Williams Community Hall, 6:30pm!
Go out, make a difference: socialize, share stories and experiences, and give a damn. You’ll be glad you did!
