Featurepreneur: Something New for Valley Taste Buds!
By Genevieve Allen Hearn

FreshO opened in Kentville this past winter, but it felt like they were bringing an early glimpse of spring to town. The restaurant, which is bright and casual, offers fresh and healthy items including fruit smoothies, salads, shawarma plates, and falafel. Opened by Case Rahim, FreshO is located on River Street next to Case’s other business, Case Cuts. The Grapevine wanted to know more!

The Grapevine (GV): You run a barber shop called Case Cuts, and recently opened FreshO. What inspired you to open a second business?

Case Rahim (CR): I moved back from Alberta after 9 years, to raise my kids in Nova Scotia around their family, and it was the best move I ever made in my life. I opened Case Cuts a year and half ago and I really liked the Valley and the support I had from everyone – they’ve made me feel I’m home. So I opened FreshO to give back to the community. It is important to me to hire local and bring something new and tasty to everyone in Valley.

GV: This issue of The Grapevine is about all things ‘new’. Is FreshO bringing anything ‘new’ to the Valley that wasn’t already here?

CR: We offer smoothies, falafel and shawarma which, I believe, there was none here in Kentville before we opened.

GV: With other businesses like CentreStage and the River Street Workshop, River Street in Kentville is becoming a vibrant spot. What are your hopes for this corner of the town?

CR: Any spot in the Valley is beautiful and has a peace and quiet feeling to it. To be honest, whereever you open in Kentville, it will work out because that’s the nature of the people here in Valley: they like to support local business and try new things, which makes it easy to open anywhere.

GV: Do you have any advice for aspiring business owners?

CR: Always give back to the community as much as you can, and always be fair with your prices. Honesty is the key to success.
