What’s Growing at the Harriet Irving Botanical Gardens – Woodland Bushcraft

Do you know how to survive in the Woods? I do, at least I’d like to think I do. It’s not however a skillset that has come to me naturally. I certainly didn’t learn it on the urban streets of Toronto where I spent much of my youth. I’m much better at navigating through gridlocked traffic on my bicycle than finding my way out of the woods, but I’m learning! As the world becomes more filled with technology and urban sprawl we are losing touch with basic outdoor survival skills. We hope to help change this with a one-day workshop this summer where local educator and naturalist Eric Kershaw will share his wilderness survival skills with young participants.

If you’re between the ages of 11 and 15 we invite you to join us on Tuesday, August 2 for a fun excursion into the woods exploring the wonderful world of bushcraft. This one-day workshop will focus on wilderness foraging, navigating, shelter building, and fire making skills. Participants will have a chance to get their hands dirty as they explore Acadia’s Woodland Trails and the Harriet Irving Botanical Gardens. It will be a full day of activities in the great outdoors starting at 9am and running until 4:30pm. Workshop fee is $20. If money is a barrier, please talk to us as bursaries are available thanks to a donation from the Friends of the Acadian Forest. Space is limited so pre-registration is required. Email botanicalgardens@acadiau.ca to register or call 902-585-1916.
