Kids have been playing hockey in Nova Scotia since at least around 1800. In his 1844 book The Attaché, also known as Slick in England, Judge Thomas Chandler Haliburton wrote, “you boys let out racin’, yelpin’, hollerin’ and whoopin’ like mad with pleasure; and the playground, and the game at bass (base) in the fields or hurley on the long pond on the ice, or campin’ out a-night at Chester lakes to fish.†Haliburton had attended Kings College School in Windsor, Nova Scotia where Long Pond is still found. Most believe that Haliburton’s reference to the game of ‘hurley’ is actually referring to an early game of hockey, making Windsor the birthplace of hockey.
