Rachel Bobbitt

Dear Rachel, Thank you so much for agreeing to be in the Who’s Who. I have never been this nervous to write about someone. I know that as you read this, you’re smiling with that infectious smile of yours and saying, “Why would you be nervous to write about me? I’m so boring,” Well, Rachel, you are wrong! I am nervous because for years you’ve sat in the audience and watched me perform in many shows and have always been a great support to me, as well as a wonderful person to work with, but it’s your natural and genuine…

HAIR TODAY AND GONE TOMORROW!!

Well, I am game for just about any new adventure and I am willing to try practically everything, as long as it’s safe and not crazy (like bungee jumping or driving standard). I have tested many of my comfort zones for this column, but this one went above and beyond, I think! I have been MANSCAPED, and I want to share the experience with you.   Last year, the kind folks at the In Good Hands Nails and Esthetics Spa in Wolfville invited me over to have a pedicure, try out some of their products, and then write about them….

For the Health of it: Eat Your Weeds

Seasonal health secrets of Chinese medicine, shared by Devorah Fallows R.Ac., Wolfville “They’re quite tasty—honest.” My patient’s left eyebrow raised slowly of its own accord as she looked at me quizzically. “Eat your weeds! It’s that simple,” I explained. A conspiratorial grin crept across her face as she stood watching me in my crisp white doctor’s coat, giving my prescription: “Fresh young dandelion and nettle leaves: add them to everything. Use them just like you would use spinach.” Up and down the Valley there is an explosion of colour: rows of flowering fruit trees and grapevines, alternating with rows of…

Asparagus Soup

Chef Dave Smart | Front & Central 902-542-0588 | frontandcentral.com Asparagus Asparagus is poking its head up: bright-green spears of absolutely delicious spring flavour. Grilled, sautéed, roasted, or simply steamed, served with a fresh lemon aioli or a knob of butter, it is one of my favourite spring vegetables. One of my favourite preparations is using it in a pureed soup to highlight its beautiful fresh flavor. The addition of sour cream gives it richness and a velvety texture. A quick garnish of chopped chives echoes the fresh flavours of spring. Dave Smart Asparagus Soup Ingredients: 2 lbs asparagus, ends…

Leone Stanway: Note Perfect!

Well, folks, this is a first. I am sitting here at the Il Dolce Café, writing my Who’s Who, and my subject is here with me! I have never written one of these articles with the subject present. I am a little nervous, not going to lie, but inspired at the same time and feeling a little pressure to get all the facts right. Leone Stanway just happens to work as a part-time barista with me at the Il Dolce café on Elm Avenue, but that’s not how we met. Last fall, Leone came on board the Fezziwig Society as…

Anonymous Gift Card

As many folks know, I am currently unemployed. The job hunt goes on but it has been pretty stressful. However, my community helps me stay sane by passing on possible job leads, or helping with job-hunting tips, or just by giving me hugs as they pass by (hugs really do make everything better). And today, some lovely anonymous person left a $20 Just Us gift card on my table while I was on an errand. Thank you my fellow Wolfvillians for being so totally awesome. Donna-Lynne M. Holmes

The Blue Sky Journal

The Blue Sky Journal was not that different from the Grapevine. In 1979, a group of community-minded writers and photographers decided to start an alternative newspaper in the area. The Blue Sky Journal was born of a desire to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas in the Valley. Issue #1, in October 1979, described our vision: “The creation of a monthly news media, a lively view of the community and the issues which affect us, and a showcase for local writers.” The publication was first released with two editions per month, then changed to monthly and sold for…
