AVRL News: Books – the gift you can open again and again
By Angela Reynolds, Community Engagement Coordinator, Annapolis Valley Regional Library
Picture Book Month is an international literacy initiative that celebrates the print picture book during the month of November. In this digital age where people are predicting the coming death of print books, picture books (the print kind) need love. And the world needs picture books. There’s nothing like the physical page turn of a beautifully crafted picture book.
If you’ve ever sat with a child on your lap, and shared a picture book, you know the magic that happens. Picture books are like a portable art exhibit, one with 32 pages of art to share wherever you take it. Every year at the Annapolis Valley Regional Library (AVRL), our staff members get asked for book recommendations to buy as gifts. This year, we are partnering with The Box of Delights Bookshop to make it really easy. On November 25 at 7pm, picture book expert Angela Reynolds will feature her favourites of the year, and also talk about chapter books for older readers.
If you can’t make it to the November 25 event, head over to Angela’s blog, valleystorytime.wordpress.com, and find lots of picture book recommendations there. If you are looking for books for teens or adults, just head to our website at valleylibrary.ca and look at Staff Picks or the Teen page for some librarian-curated lists. Books make great gifts, so don’t be shy about asking our staff for their favourites, and then going to buy them from your local independent bookseller!
